An allergy occurs in a person's body as a response to any substance which results in a reaction even though the substance is not harmful in itself. A person who is allergic to a substance suffers some amount of inconvenience because of it. There are various similarities and also differences between asthma and allergies. The similarities between asthma and allergy are as follows:

Both are immune based diseases and doctors have given them a common diagnostic name which is Rhino bronchitis or Allergic airway syndrome.
They can have a common trigger like pollen, dust, mold and sometimes even pets.
Asthma and allergy release chemicals like leukotrienes and histamines in the body of the sufferer.
Both are capable of causing inflammation of the respiratory system. Allergies can also lead to asthma especially in children, while an asthmatic attack can be an allergic attack as well.

When you are suffering from asthma, you need to make huge changes to your diet. When changing your diet, there are some foods you need to include while there are some food you need to exclude. A healthy asthma diet often involve choosing healthier choices like fruit and vegetables over unhealthier processed. The main aim of any asthma diet is to lose weight since there is such a strong correlation between weight and frequency of asthma attack. Here are some foods you should exclude to make it more asthma friendly.Avoid white food. What I mean by white food is food like white bread, white rice and refined sugar. The problem with these types of food is that they are very starchy and lead to weight gain easily. White food consists mainly of simple carbohydrate which means the body will burn these foods pretty quickly causing to get hungrier faster and eat more instead.Instead of eating white food, choose whole meal food like brown rice and whole meal bread. Professional runners and ironman personally prefer carbo-loading with complex carbohydrates it makes them last longer.About 70 percent of asthmatics suffer from GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. When someone has GERD, stomach acid has a tendency to flow back into the esophagus, creating a burning feeling sensation. These acids can often irritate the lungs, causing the asthma to become worse. These are food that aggravate the acid reflux effectStay away from fatty or acid food. Reason being is that the body find it hard to digest them. You can always opt for them to be baked or boiled instead. If you are an herbal remedy fanatic, you might want to stay away from peppermint for a while.Stay from chili or any other spicy food like curry as these foods already irritate your lower esophagus.

If you have a child who struggles with asthma, you know that everything you do is ruled by their asthma. You constantly find yourself worrying about what will and won't trigger an asthma attack. Parents of asthmatic children find themselves wondering if they should allow their children to swim in swimming pools. There is some evidence that the chlorine that is commonly used to keep the pool sanitized and the water really clean could actually trigger an asthma attack. Not only do many experts feel that chlorine can trigger breathing problems in individuals who already have asthma, some experts wonder if the reason that there are so many asthmatic swimmers could be because the chlorine causes some people to develop the respiratory condition. In the past the only way your child could enjoy a cool dip in their swimming pool was if they were willing to risk an asthma attack. The good news is that it might now be possible for your asthmatic child to enjoy swimming in your swimming pool and not have to worry that they won't be able to breathe when they get out of the pool. The answer could come in the form of pool salt water chlorinators. What pool salt water chlorinators do is eliminate the need for you to use chemicals to keep the water in your pool clean. When you take advantage of the pool salt water chlorinators the only additive that will be in your swimming pool will be salt. Unlike the chlorine, the salt should not trigger an asthma attack the next time your child goes swimming.Your child isn't the only person who will enjoy swimming in your pool better after the pool salt water chlorinators have been added. You'll find that you also like the pool better. The chemicals you previously used have a tendency to dry out swimmers skin and hair. This won't happen when you are swimming in a pool that is treated with pool salt water chlorinators. While the fact that you child will be able to enjoy a cool dip without having to wonder if they are going to be able to breathe or not is the best reason to make the change from pool cleaning chemicals to pool salt water chlorinators, it isn't the only reason.Using pool salt water chlorinators is going to save you all kinds of money. Although you will have to add a bit of extra salt from time to time, you aren't going to have to ever purchase pool cleaning supplies every again. The pool salt water chlorinators do a better job of keeping your pool water sanitized which means that there will be less wear and tear on your filtration system which will save you even more money.

Asthma is easily recognizable by its shortness of breath and constant coughing. It is an automatic reaction of the human body to specific allergens in one's surrounding environment. Potentially, it can be one of the most troublesome respiratory diseases to treat. Although an asthma sufferer may experience periods of normalcy, he or she can experience the shortness of breath and constant coughing at a moment's notice. The difficulty in breathing is caused by involuntary contractions of the smaller airways within a person's lungs. The most common allergens that trigger an asthma attack include dust, weather conditions, physical activity, perfumes, and certain types of foods. Of this extensive list, the most common trigger is dust. In order to prevent such attacks, a person must take extra precautions when it comes to limiting their exposure to these triggers. There are many forms of treatment for the constant coughing caused by asthma. Many patients are prescribed inhalers and oral medications that are designed to treat their attacks. Some individuals employ the use of a breathing treatment machine, which breaks up accumulated mucus and phlegm in their lungs, allowing them to breathe much easier. However, there are natural home remedies a person can use to minimize the frequency and severity of their asthma attacks. For example, honey is often used a treatment for frequent coughing. It coats the lining of irritated mucus membranes, which reduces the body's natural reflex to cough. Similarly, figs are a common fruit used in asthma treatment. When cleaned and soaked overnight in warm water, figs become rather adept at draining phlegm from the lungs. In a similar manner, lemon has been found to be an effective treatment form for asthma. The juice of one lemon should be diluted with water and drunk during mealtimes. When safflower seed oil is mixed with one teaspoon of honey and taken once or twice a day, it can also be an effective form of treatment for asthma. Because the mixture acts as an expectorant, it reduces bronchial spasms by coating the tenacious sputum. These home remedies should not be used in place of conventional treatments for asthma. When an asthma attack occurs, it restricts a person's airways and their ability to breathe. In this type of situation, only modern medicine is going to be effective in allowing an individual to breathe. However, these home remedies can be effective in treating the symptoms, like constant coughing that asthma produces.

Has someone told you that asthma is incurable? If so they are leading you away from one of the most amazing discoveries you could ever make! All you have to do is understand what the cause of asthma truly is and that cause is environmental pollution. Why do we believe environmental pollution is the cause of this life stealing disease? Because we have done some trials on a few people who were diagnosed with asthma and all we did was use a method that did one thing and one thing only, removed all those environmental pollutants from the body. The body does what it does best, it healed itself. My son was part of this trial and I have to say it was the best thing I ever did for him. He was diagnosed at 4 years old, he had been having some severe health issues with coughs and harsh breathing since he was 3 but it was never identified as asthma till he was 4. He is now 6 and completely off his asthma medications, we now let his nebulizer and his prescription drugs and inhaler sit on a shelf collecting dust. A side effect from this discovery that we used is he has not been sick in these 2 years, we have now forgotten what it is like to sit in the doctor's office all the time waiting to be seen, what a blessing!Another amazing story was a woman named Phyllis who lives in California and has been suffering from asthma for many years. The first time I talked with her I could barely understand what she was saying because she was forced to speak in a whisper. She tried this amazing method and after the first week her voice started to return. Her voice had been gone for a few years and she was also was able to stop using those prescription drugs and inhalers that only managed her asthma and never really helped her overcome it, but she is now asthma free and living her life to the fullest! We don't tell you these stories to impress you, we tell you these stories to impress upon you that there is hope for asthma sufferers. A very common respiratory tract disease, asthma is accompanied by several symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and difficulty in breathing. To counteract this disease, OTC asthma medications are recommended. How do OTC asthma medications work? It works in two ways: one, it blocks asthma attacks by fending the onset of triggers and second, it provides quick comfort by clearing the air passages. The first category of OTC medications includes loratadine, diphenhydramine, or chlorpheniramine that comes in either oral or liquid form. Most asthma allergies are due to histamines. Therefore, an antihistamine prevents asthma attacks by stopping the histamines from entering your system. This type of medications for asthma is the same as those prescribed for the sickness. For example, Claritin which was originally available for prescription, is currently ready for use as an over-the-counter medication.Be careful though when choosing an antihistamine because there are those that are combined with other ingredients in one single medicine. Always read the packaging. One prevalent effect of antihistamine is drowsiness and even recent medications still has this effect. Take, for example, benadryl. This medication is actually consumed as a sleeping aid. Another kind of OTC medication is inhaled medicines. Primatene mist is such an example where it contains epinephrine, which is classified as a bronchodilator. The active ingredient epinephrine is a stimulant so an overdosage of any medication containing this ingredient can cause an elevation of blood pressure as well as jittery feeling.Although OTC asthma medications are perceived to be dangerous and not so effective in treating the sickness, it's been proven to work efficiently for the random and delicate asthma attacks that a person suffers. Plus, it's reasonably priced than the prescription drugs. An OTC medication is very beneficial to almost all types of attacks in asthma. However, it is best to use prescription drugs as indicated. However, is severe cases of asthma attacks, a prescription inhaler with a relatively strong effect such as Proventil is really needed. Aside from this prescription inhaler, the doctor will also recommend an inhaler like Flovent for maintenance purposes so that lung inflammation is avoided, and future attacks are minimized.

Many illnesses in children and adults are actually caused by a cat allergy symptom. The source of the allergy symptom is of course our feline pet friends. Today, one out of two households has a cat for a pet. This exposes millions who suffer from cat allergy symptom(s) to allergens that produce symptoms ranging from sneezing to severe asthma.Cat asthma refers to the sudden reaction some people have to coming in close contact with a cat. The victim suffers from spasms and swelling of the respiratory tract due to the immune system rejecting the protein contained in the pet dander. This protein is carried in the cat's saliva and deposited on the feline's fur (to become pet dander) during a cat's constant grooming ritual. In severe instances the airway can be shut off and the person unable to breath. The top four symptoms that contribute and may indicate an asthma attack is around the corner are as follows:1. Acute Rhinitis.Rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal passages in the nose. Acute rhinitis means it occurs suddenly. Many people who suffer from cat (and often food) allergies have an instant reaction when a kitty is brought near their face. This usually evokes a fit of sneezing, and an itchy runny nose. Often the person may sneeze uncontrollably. Allergy relief for this symptom may consist of an over the counter oral antihistamine and/or nasal spray to alleviate cat allergy symptom(s).2. Itchy, red, watery eyes. Some sufferers' eyes will water so much it may look like they are crying. Eye drops for cat allergy relief are available over the counter and by a doctor's prescription.3. Skin Rash or hives. The skin may have an adverse reaction if the cat saliva comes into contact with the skin (such as the cat licking or rubbing up against you). A raised red area called hives may occur at the point of contact. The body's immune system then takes over and continues to make the rash worsen. Washing the area may help give cat allergy relief from this symptom.

Asthma, which is a chronic disease in the lungs, is characterized by:• Hyper responsiveness of the airways to different stimuli like viruses, allergens or exercise
• Inflammation of the airways
• Reversible narrowing or obstruction of the airwaysAsthma pathophysiology indicates that inflammation in the airways is an essential part of the pathology of asthma. This is the underlying process which drives and maintains the process of asthmatic inflammatory. The stimuli trigger the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells, eosinophils, macrophages and other cells in the airways. Increase in mucus is also triggered along with the contraction of the airways. In many cases, both environmental and genetic factors are involved in asthma pathophysiology. Most patients who develop asthma early on are those who have familial histories of allergies, eczema or asthma.

It is very important to understand the difference between Asthma and allergies. They are two very different and separate diseases. Common ground shared by the two diseases is the fact that they are both immune-based diseases. They share a diagnostic name: Rinobronchitis (allergic airway syndrome). Allergies are an immune system condition. Asthma is better considered a respiratory condition. An allergy can be defined as an exaggerated and/or abnormal response of the body when exposed to allergens. Allergens are basically irritants. What happens during an allergic reaction is the body begins to over-produce antibodies known as immunoglobulin E. This causes histamine to be released and this release causes typical allergenic symptoms. A few known allergens are: air pollution, dust mites, molds, perfumes, smoke, viruses, and pollens. The negative effects of the allergens can be drastically reduced if you use common allergy reduction medicines.Asthma is a respiratory disease. In an asthma attack, the airways in the lungs react to certain irritants in a hypersensitive manner. Continual labored breathing occurs usually combined with sneezing, coughing, and gasping. There is a feeling of tight constriction in the chest. When airways constrict, bronchial tubes will begin to swell, mucus develops, and difficulty in breathing becomes predominately worse. The end result of asthma attacks is difficulty in getting air into the lungs. What does all this information tell us? You can suffer from allergies and not have asthma. Likewise, you may have asthma, but not suffer from allergies. Asthma can be caused by underlying allergies. So can depression. Asthma will not be the cause of suffering from allergies of any type. It is important to note that not every person who has allergies will develop asthma. Understanding that there are important differences with the two diseases of asthma and allergy is very important. Knowing exactly what disease you have determine what type of treatment will be sought.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that narrows and inflames the airways (the tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs). These blocked airways cause breathing difficulty resulting in wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing and chest tightness.Asthma is basically divided in to two groups- allergic asthma and non- allergic asthma. The allergic asthma's symptoms are usually triggered by an allergic reaction. This type of asthma is the most popular one. The factors that trigger the allergic asthma symptoms are dust mite allergen, pet dander, mold, pollen, etc.
The non- allergic asthma is the less popular one. It is not associated with an allergic reaction, instead it is triggered by factors such as stress, dry air, cold air, anxiety, exercise, smoke, hyperventilation, viruses or other irritants. Some interesting facts and statistics about asthma:

There are around 300 million people with the disease in the world, 20 million of them in the United States.
There are around 7.4 million children with asthma, which is more than 9% of the children in the world.
Workplace conditions are responsible for around 11% of all this disease cases in the world.
Estimates show that the number of people suffering from it will grow by 100 million until 2025.
Asthma was responsible for over 3000 death in the US in 2005, which means that more than 8 people died from the disease every day.
In the past 10 years asthma rated among colored children has increase by 50%.
Women are more likely to have it than man, but boys are more likely than girls.
Asthma accounts for nearly 15 million school days missed each year and 25 million missed work days.
If one of the parents has asthma there is a 30% chance that the child will also have asthma, if both parents have asthma the chances grow up to 70%.
Asthma is estimated to cost Americans over 16 billion dollars every year.

Avoid TriggersAn asthma patient should know his symptoms well and also understand what triggers those symptoms.
Once the triggers are recognized, an asthma patient should avoid them as much as possible. Some of the common triggers are:繚 Tobacco smoke, which acts as an irritant and aggravates asthma.繚 Medications like beta-blockers (used to treat heart disease, high blood pressure, migraine headaches or glaucoma) as well as aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) such as ibuprofen.繚 Bacterial as well as viral infections like common cold and sinusitis.繚 Emotional anxiety.繚 Common allergens like house dust mites, animal dander (dead skin flakes), molds, pollen, cockroach droppings or foods. In order to avoid such allergens, the patient should cover the mattresses, pillows and box springs with allergic casings. In case it's a house with pets, HEPA filter should be used. Moreover, pets should not be allowed to enter the bedroom.
